“Cooking is an art, but you eat it too.” Marcella Hazan (Italian-born cooking writer)
If you’re in the business you probably know how important it is that the plate you serve, before it goes under the scrutiny of a guest, looks good.
The guest is not only hungry but has high expectations to enjoy the dish. However, before your guest brings her fork and knife, chop sticks, or whichever way she chooses to gobble her meal, she’ll be grateful and delighted to receive a plate that is artistically put together. The food plating and presentation are key influences in keeping your guest happy.
It seems that sometimes Chefs overlook this reasoning and they become over whelmed with the idea that their food needs to taste better than it looks. But that’s misreading the essential message. A plate nicely presented can send strong messages to the guest namely by suggestingthat a plate that looks that good and has been delicately and masterfully created must have an exquisite taste!
Basically, it has been notably observed that the presentation of the food (the art of plating) immediately gives your guest a signal about the meal she is about to try. The guest can rest assured that for one, she is getting her money’s worth, two, talented Chefs are employed and have been invested in and three, creative plating glorifies the expectations and once the eye eats, its almost for sure that the taste will be enhanced in the opinion of your guest!!
The good thing is that there is no right or wrong about the ‘art of plating’. The plate is transferred into an open canvas for the Chef, who has the opportunity to bring together a delicious masterpiece.
